Southern Cross Engineering Group

Southern Cross Engineering Group
Originally established in Christchurch in 1955, the Southern Cross Engineering Group is now one of the largest mechanical project engineering firms in New Zealand. It has built a solid reputation for specialist design/build, materials handling and heavy fabrication, whilst also setting new standards of service and technology for the timber processing industry.

The Group enjoys the advantages of a long term continuity of projects and offers customers a total solutions-based approach to their needs throughout Australasia, the Pacific and beyond.

The focus has been primarily on the timber industry, but now extends to a number of other sectors including woodchip, coal and gypsum handling and the quarrying and mining industries.

Fabrication/Materials Handling

The Southern Cross Group is perfectly positioned to take full advantage of any number of major project opportunities throughout Australasia. The team comprises electrical and design engineers, project managers and tradesmen.

The workshop is extensive and includes machine, fitting and fabrication shops, overhead cranes, a CNC machining centre and high definition plasma cutter. This combination of equipment offers a one-stop-shop capability, resulting in higher levels of quality control, production performance and cost effectiveness.

Greenmill Capability

The Group designs, manufactures and installs machinery for the sawmill, plywood and LVL industries. This equipment is designed to suit individual customers’ requirements and is usually a total turnkey operation.

Typical processes include log handling involving gantry cranes, log decks and infeed systems carrying timber, debarking by either ring or drum debarkers and scanning and optimisation for main machine centres. The Group is also active in biomass (pulverised wood waste) power generation – hogging and shredding through to unloading and storage/reclaim systems.

Drymill & Remanufacturing

The Group adds extra value to numerous remanufacturing processes by providing hassle free and cost competitive solutions. Typically products from solid timber remanufacturing include framing, mouldings, primed and painted mouldings, edge glued laminated boards, fingerjointed boards and laminated panels.

Drymill capability also extends to involvement in production flows, factory layouts and manufacturing processes. Materials handling encompasses infeed and outfeed systems plus stackers and destackers. Group trouble-shooting and rebuild expertise involves identifying optimum engineering solutions for a wide range of industry sectors.

Parts & Service

Solid after-sales backup and support is available across a network of four locations in Christchurch, Auckland, Brisbane and Melbourne. A preventative maintenance programme, which includes regular scheduled inspections and servicing, is offered by the Group to minimise unexpected breakdowns and production downtime.

The Parts and Service division has world-wide access to many products and can quickly process parts and consumables requirements. They also have the resource and availability of Group in-house technicians who can cover all servicing needs, both in New Zealand and Australia.
